***Chocolate, Coffee, Caffeine
Chocolate has recently been shown to be beneficial for humans health...the same is NOT true for dogs. In fact chocolate is on the fatal list for toxicity in dogs, as well as other pets and animals.
Chocolate is made from the fruit, the beans, of the cacao tree. Also made from these beans are coffee and nut extracts used in soda pop. Cacao beans contain theobromine, a component of this bean that is the toxic compound for dogs in chocolate, and coffee.
Caffeine is also present in chocolate, but in much smaller amounts than theobromine. Both theobromine and caffeine are members of a drug class called methylxanines, found in the cacao beans.
How theobromine, caffeine, and methylxanthines effect the body of your dog:
When ingested by dogs, theobromine, methylxanthines, and caffeine can cause vomiting and diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death.
The darker the chocolate the more dangerous and damaging the chocolate can be on your dogs system. White chocolate has the lowest level of methylxanthines, baking chocolate contains the highest amount.
The amount and type of chocolate ingested (dark, milk chocolate, or white chocolate) will determine whether the ingesting of chocolate, is fatal or not. However, it can cause damage to your dogs liver, even if the amount ingested does not result in death.
